Bright and early, 7:30am, Saturday November 2nd, students started to arrive to participate in the 3rd Tire Rack Street Survival of 2024. The Tire Rack Street Survival event is designed to equip teens and young adults, ages of 15-20, with valuable driving skills that will help keep them, and others, safe on the road. The Oregon Region event is held in the North Paddock of Portland International Raceway. The event was attended by 42 students and supported by a 100% volunteer staff of experienced in-car coaches, SCCA safety crew and other helpers.
The day starts with a personal in-car coach introduction where students are shown how to check their personal cars for correct tire pressures, oil level, operational seatbelts, and other general car safety checks. The rest of the day is then split into 30–45-minute slots rotating between classroom and in-car exercises. The classroom delivers enhanced drivers’ education where the students are grounded in the basics of car control and more – Why it happens – How to avoid it – What to do if it happens. The classroom prepares students for and reinforces the in-car exercises.
The in-car exercises simulate realistic scenarios the students may face on public roads at legal speeds. Cones are used to create exercises in a safe and controlled manor. The in-car exercises include emergency braking, car control under many situations, emergency lane changes and how to recover from a skid. A skilled and trained in-car coach is always sitting in the passenger seat providing valuable training and feedback to the student.
