FOPIR + OMSI Pilot STEM Camp for Local Youth

This summer, Friends of PIR and OMSI launched an exciting new pilot: a free STEM camp for 4th–5th grade students at Portland International Raceway. Over five days, students explored the world of science and engineering through the lens of motorsports—touring the racetrack, meeting professional racers, and engaging in hands-on activities that brought OMSI’s inquiry-based curriculum to life.

Designed to be both educational and accessible, the camp was a first-of-its-kind program that successfully blended classroom learning with real-world racing environments. Educators praised the program’s potential, while parents expressed gratitude for its uniqueness, STEM-focus, cost-free access, and proximity.

The camp was a clear success. Students were engaged, curious, and enthusiastic, especially during activities like walking the motocross track and the dragstrip, examining race vehicles up close and exploring the park’s broader grounds and historical markers of Vanport.

Friends of PIR and OMSI are thrilled and inspired by the positive response. The camp affirmed the value of combining motorsports and STEM education in a fun, community-focused setting. With thoughtful improvements and continued collaboration, we’re excited to expand this program to more students next year.

The camp puts FOPIR’s mission of engaging the community and building an inclusive culture through the spirit of competition into action.

On behalf of FOPIR and PIR, we would like to thank our partners at OMSI for helping to shape this idea and bring it to life:
